Camp McClellan, outside Anniston in Calhoun County, Alabama, was a wartime training cantonment in 1918, when the United States was fighting in Europe. The camp drew young men from across the South into drill, marching, and rifle practice, and it brought a sudden flood of soldiers, supply trains, and paydays to a city that had grown up around iron works, rail shops, and textile mills. Anniston had been founded in the early 1870s as an industrial town, and by the war years its Southern Railway lines and factories made it a useful place to house an army. That autumn, the influenza pandemic swept through military camps across the country, and residents of Anniston and the surrounding towns lived with its threat alongside the troop movements and war news.
