Vatican Gardens, Rome, 1909 shows a corner of the papal grounds at a moment of uneasy calm between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Italy. Rome had been the capital of that kingdom since 1871, when Italian troops took the city and ended the Papal States, and the popes of that era regarded themselves as prisoners within the Vatican walls. Pius X, who was pope in 1909, was known for his pastoral reforms and his opposition to modernist currents in Catholic thought, and the gardens were a private retreat where the pontiff and his household could walk away from the noise of the city. Visitors to Rome that year would have known the Vatican as the seat of a spiritual authority that still shaped European politics, even without its old territories.
