Lookout Mountain, the ridge that rises above the Tennessee River near Chattanooga, is the subject here, shown in color by the Krebs Litho Co. of Cincinnati and copyrighted in 1883. Union forces under Joseph Hooker took its slopes in November 1863, in a fight later called the Battle Above the Clouds because much of it unfolded in mist and low cloud. Chromolithographs like this one brought such Civil War landscapes to a wide audience in the decades after the war.
