Trente-et-Quarante, a card game in which players wager on whether red or black will win, was one of the attractions that drew well-to-do visitors to the gaming rooms of the Monte Carlo Casino. This stereograph shows the salon where the game was played, and it was published in New York by Strohmeyer & Wyman in the late 1890s. The casino building, designed by Charles Garnier, opened in 1863 and became a major source of revenue for the principality of Monaco. Stereo cards like this one gave American parlors a way to look into such distant and fashionable interiors.
