Paavo Nurmi, the Finnish distance runner nicknamed the "Flying Finn," is the subject here, and the headline announces that he has beaten the six-mile mark once held by Alfred Shrubb, an English runner who dominated long-distance racing in the early 1900s. Nurmi won several Olympic gold medals in the 1920s and kept lowering world marks throughout that decade, which made him one of the most admired athletes of his era. Pictures like this one show how closely the press followed his races and how quickly the records of the period fell.
