This print isolates the sofa in Sigmund Freud's treatment room at Berggasse 19 in Vienna's Ninth District, where he saw patients for decades. It comes from an album documenting his apartment, and its 1938 date falls in the year Freud left Austria after the Nazi annexation. Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, had patients recline on the couch during sessions, so the photograph preserves the furnishings of a working room at a moment of upheaval. He moved with his family to London later that year and died there in 1939.
