The State Dining Room of the White House is the room where presidents host formal dinners for heads of state and other official guests, and this view comes from the Detroit Photographic Company, a firm known for its early color-tinted views of American sites. Photographs of the room from this period were relatively rare, so the image offers a glimpse of its furnishings and layout at a time when the building was far less visited by the public. Notice how the long table, the chairs, and the lighting reflect the mid-to-late nineteenth-century style of official entertaining.
