Few hotels in Salt Lake City were newer or more prominent around 1911 than the Hotel Utah, which the Library of Congress catalogs here alongside a view of the street on which it stood. The photograph was made by the Johnson Company, a Salt Lake studio whose views of the city's buildings and streets were widely sold in the early twentieth century. Pictures like this one record how a downtown hotel and its streetscape looked during a period of rapid growth, when new brick and stone commercial buildings were transforming the city and streetcars and early automobiles were becoming common sights.
