Old Fort Niagara stands where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, a site that controlled the water route between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic colonies. The French built the first stone fort there in the 1720s, and the British captured it during the Seven Years' War in 1759. This photochrom, a color print made from a photograph and produced by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1900, shows the fort as a tourist attraction, when its old walls drew visitors interested in the region's military past.
