The rapids pictured here lie on the Niagara River below the falls, and the title ties the view to the Lewiston Branch of the New York Central Railway, which ran along the gorge toward the river's lower reaches. The print is an albumen photograph on board, made around 1890 by W.H. Jackson's studio and listed in the firm's 1898 catalog of views. Jackson's large-format work of this kind documented scenic sites and the rail lines that brought visitors to them, so the picture records both the river's churning water and the tourist traffic that made Niagara one of the most photographed places in the country.
