This glass negative shows a figurehead carved for the U.S.S. Niagara, the name the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card. The record dates it to May 24, 1902, but the title is marked as unverified, so the ship's identity should be checked against naval sources before it is relied on. The Niagara was a mid-19th-century steam frigate, and the record does not explain why the carving appears on a board devoted to Niagara Falls. Bain's plates were made for the news trade in the early 1900s, so the picture is best read as a working news record of a naval object.
