Among the many Bain negatives of Niagara Falls, this glass plate is catalogued under the bare title "Niagara," a label that Bain News Service applied to its negatives and caption cards, though the Library of Congress notes the title has not been independently verified. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds roughly 40,000 news photographs made in the early twentieth century, when the falls drew steady crowds of tourists, honeymooners and sightseers and were also a subject for newspapers covering engineering and industry along the gorge. Because the record gives no date, the picture is best read as a document of its period: a view of the cataract as Bain's photographers saw it in the years around 1900 to 1920.
