Rock of Ages is a rocky ledge at the brink of the American Fall, where visitors could stand close to the falling water. This color view was made around 1898 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which used photochrom, a process that printed a separate lithographic stone for each color over a photographic base. The company sold views like this as souvenirs and travel images, and color gave viewers a richer sense of a famous place than black-and-white photographs usually could. Notice how the pale green water and the dark, wet rock are rendered in saturated tones.
