A young girl and a cat appear to plead for a share of milk in this color lithograph, an advertisement for sterilized milk from La Vingeanne, a producer in Montigny-sur-Vingeanne in the Côte-d'Or. The poster was designed by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, a Montmartre illustrator known for his drawings of cats and working-class Paris, and printed in Paris around 1895. Advertisers of the 1890s often turned to such artists, since bold color and charming scenes were meant to catch the eye of passersby on city walls. Its appeal to children and pets reflects how the period marketed fresh, safe milk to families.
