Unlike the illustrated wartime posters around it, this one has no picture at all, only a column of six numbered instructions under the heading "Food, don't waste it." Printed in 1917 as No. 1 in a series from the U.S. Food Administration, it asks households to buy with thought, cook with care, use less wheat and meat, buy local foods, serve just enough, and use what is left. The agency, led by Herbert Hoover, was created that year to manage American food supplies during World War I, and appeals like this one aimed to bring conservation into ordinary kitchens across the country.
