The poster's slogan, "The world cry food," asks Americans to keep their home gardens producing through 1918, the last full year of the war. It was designed for the United States Food Administration, the agency Herbert Hoover directed after its creation in 1917 to manage food supplies for the Allies and for the home front. Posters like this one promoted voluntary conservation, including meatless and wheatless days, and encouraged families to grow their own vegetables so that more commercial food could be shipped overseas. William McKee's design shows how the government turned commercial illustration into a tool for reaching ordinary households.
