Corn takes center stage in this 1918 color lithograph, which calls it "the food of the nation" and recommends it at every meal as appetizing, nourishing, and economical. Lloyd Harrison produced the poster for the Baltimore firm Harrison-Landauer, and it was issued under the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency led by Herbert Hoover. With wheat and other staples needed to feed Allied troops and civilians in Europe, the government urged Americans to conserve and substitute cheaper grains like corn, and posters like this one carried that message into kitchens and public spaces.
