Railroads reshaped the American landscape more than almost any other technology of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and a picture titled simply "Trains" belongs to that long period of change. The first transcontinental line was completed in 1869, and after that the locomotive stood for speed, commerce and westward expansion. Steam engines, freight cars and depots appear again and again in photographs and prints of the era, often with a sense of motion or of crowds gathered along the tracks. Such scenes show how the railroad organized towns, work and daily timetables across the country.
