The picture is titled simply "Apples," and its board places it among other images under the broader Pictorial America heading that focuses on the fruit. Apples were a staple of American farms and kitchens from the colonial period on. In the early 1800s, John Chapman, known as Johnny Appleseed, planted nurseries across Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and by the late 1800s commercial orchards had spread through New York, Michigan, and the Pacific Northwest. Pictures of the fruit from that era often show how central it was to rural life and local markets.
