Titled simply "Apples!", this picture makes the fruit its entire subject, and the exclamation point signals more enthusiasm than a plain label would. Apples were a staple of American orchards and farm tables for generations, and growers and seed sellers relied on images of fruit in catalogs, magazines and advertising. Pictures like this often served as both record and promotion, showing the shape, color and abundance of a crop. Notice how the fruit is arranged and lit, since those choices reveal the intended audience as much as the apples themselves.
