The title poses a riddle the picture never fully settles: a man is headed to the ball park, yet the question of whether he is going or coming is the joke. Comic scenes like this were popular in the early twentieth century, when railroads and interurban lines carried crowds to baseball games in growing cities, and a trip to the game was often a small outing in itself. Humor about travel like this shows how central the train had become to ordinary leisure. Look closely at the figure and the route to see how the artist played with direction and expectation.
