Tall and narrow at about 209 by 99 centimeters, this color lithograph advertises La Marquisette, a dessert liqueur, and bears the signature of Leonetto Cappiello, the Florentine-born artist who settled in Paris around 1898 and became one of the city's leading poster designers. Its vertical format suited the advertising columns and walls of Paris streets, where posters competed for attention in a crowded visual field. The Paris printing house Vercasson & Cie. produced the work, which reflects the period's shift toward bold color, simplified forms and a single striking image meant to be read at a glance.
