Polar bears, an unusual pairing for a chocolate advertisement, set this Cailler poster apart from the many food posters of its era. Leonetto Cappiello, the Florentine-born designer who worked mostly in Paris, favored simple shapes, flat areas of color, and bold lettering that could catch a passerby's eye from across a street. The title's word "Frigor" points to cold, a theme that suits a white-furred bear scene promoting a sweet. The poster was issued in 1929 by Les Nouvelles Affiches Cappiello, the Paris studio that printed Cappiello's lithographs, and it reflects the high point of French poster design in the 1920s.
