Signed in pencil below the plate and dated 1929, this etching is titled *Breadline* and depicts the queues of hungry people that had become a familiar sight in American cities by that year. The plate, marked "R.M.," is one of the works reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a visual history of the United States with commentary by Alan Brinkley. Breadlines and soup kitchens spread quickly after the stock market crash of October 1929, and printmakers like this one helped record how ordinary people faced hunger in the early Depression.
