Ads like this one from around 1858 promised that bread could be made by machine, a selling point at a time when most loaves were still mixed and kneaded by hand in small shops. Color lithographs were a popular and fairly new way to advertise, and this one, catalogued as No. 605, presents the bakery's product as clean, modern, and up to date. Pictures like it show how bakers and advertisers in the 1850s tried to win customers by stressing new methods and reliable, uniform bread.
