Few posters of the 1890s look as stark as this one for Rowntree's Elect Cocoa, designed in London in 1895 by the Beggarstaff Brothers, the partnership of William Nicholson and James Pryde. They worked with flat areas of color, heavy outlines, and simplified shapes, drawing on Japanese woodblock prints. That approach made a poster readable from across a busy street, which mattered on London's crowded advertising hoardings. Rowntree's, the York firm known for its cocoa and chocolate, suited the bold style for a brand that wanted to stand out.
