Few prints of the 1870s are as single-mindedly devoted to livestock as this color lithograph, which puts the hog at the center of the sheet. Printed by the Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company of Boston, it belongs to a category of commercial images that celebrated swine, likely for breeders and agricultural promoters. Pork was a staple of the American diet in this period, and hog raising was a significant business, so the print reflects the food economy of its day. Its U.S. copyright notation shows that such advertising images were registered and protected as they circulated.
