Denton True "Cy" Young appears here in the uniform of the Boston Americans, the team he joined when the American League began play in 1901. He pitched for Boston through the franchise's early seasons and started for the team in the first modern World Series in 1903, against Pittsburgh. Young threw a perfect game in 1904, and his 511 career wins remain the most by any pitcher. Portraits from this era show how early players presented themselves to a public that followed the game closely in newspapers.
