Few advertisements of the 1890s name a price as plainly as this one, which offers a glass of Coca-Cola for five cents. The drink had been created in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1886 by pharmacist John Pemberton and was sold mainly at soda fountains, where a nickel was a common price for a glass. During the 1890s, Asa Candler's company promoted the brand through posters and trade cards like this one, helping turn a fountain beverage into a familiar national name. The gallery groups the picture under clothing and hats, a reminder that commercial images of the period often featured fashionably dressed figures to catch the eye.
