Uncle Sam's fatal folly," the headline on this color poster, sets it apart from other newspaper advertisements of the period, and the title line credits an artist named Brill. Printed in Philadelphia by H.I. Ireland in 1896, it promotes the New York Sunday Journal's 32 pages for 3 cents. That year the Journal was under William Randolph Hearst, who had bought it in 1895 and was competing fiercely with Joseph Pulitzer's World for readers. Bargain pricing and eye-catching street posters like this one were common tools in that circulation battle.
