Portobello, on the Firth of Forth just east of Edinburgh, was a popular seaside resort for city residents by the late 1800s, and this view shows its sandy shore. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that used multiple stone lithographic plates to reproduce photographs in color. The Detroit Publishing Company licensed the process and sold these prints in the United States, and this one is listed in its 1905 catalog as number 13039. The photograph itself is generally dated to the 1890s, a period when such prints gave American buyers a colorful glimpse of places they might never visit.
