The title names a charity sale held to support a volunteer hospital, and the poster is signed by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, the Swiss-born artist best known for his Montmartre cabaret work. Printed in sepia ink in 1916, when the war in France had produced heavy casualties, it belongs to a wave of fundraising posters that drew on the artist's reputation to bring in buyers. Volunteer hospitals of this kind were run by private committees, often led by women, and they supplemented the military medical services. The sepia lithograph is worth a close look for how Steinlen balanced an appeal for money against the grim reality of wounded soldiers.
