Among the portraits of Charlie Chaplin in this collection, this one stands out as a working study rather than a finished likeness: a graphite sketch made as preparation for a drawing that was later published in the book Malibu Beach. Chaplin, the British-born comic actor and filmmaker, was at the height of his fame around 1933, when he was known worldwide for his tramp character. The loose, searching lines of the sketch show an artist testing angles and proportions before settling on a final image, which makes it a useful glimpse of the process behind a published portrait.
