A 1924 pen drawing of the poet and editor Charles Hanson Towne, it was published under the heading "The Man from Mexico takes a passing shot at our literati," so it was made to poke fun at the writers of its day rather than to give a dignified likeness. Towne (1877-1949) was a fixture of New York's literary circles, known for his verse and his work as a magazine editor. Satirical drawings like this one turned well-known authors into easily recognized public figures, and this example shows how the period's literary world was both celebrated and gently mocked in print.
