Smiths Plantation, near Beaufort, South Carolina, is the setting for this 1862 view of a large group gathered before its buildings. Union forces had taken the Port Royal region in November 1861, and many planters fled, leaving enslaved people whose futures were being reshaped by the war. The catalog attributes the photograph to Mathew B. Brady, and its title carries a question mark over how the people were described, a reminder that such records are often uncertain. Historians study the image for what it shows of plantation buildings and daily life at a moment of upheaval.
