Roosevelt Dam sits on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, and this view from about 1915 shows the reservoir that formed behind it. The U.S. Reclamation Service built the masonry dam, completed it in 1911, and named it for Theodore Roosevelt, who dedicated it that spring. Its purpose was to store water for irrigation in the Salt River Valley, which made farming possible across much of the region. The photograph was taken by McCulloch, a Phoenix studio that recorded the state's early public works.
