Roosevelt Dam, on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, was named for Theodore Roosevelt, who had championed federal reclamation while in office. Built by the U.S. Reclamation Service and completed in 1911, the masonry dam created the reservoir now called Theodore Roosevelt Lake, which stored water for irrigation in the Salt River Valley. This view, copyrighted by the Phoenix photographer McCulloch around 1915, shows a broad sheet of water against bare desert hills, a reminder of how federal irrigation projects were reshaping the arid Southwest.
