Few views of early western water engineering are as sweeping as this panorama of overflow spilling from Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in Arizona. The dam, named for President Theodore Roosevelt, was built by the federal Reclamation Service between 1905 and 1911 to store water for irrigation in the Phoenix area, and it was among the tallest masonry dams in the world when completed. This print was registered for copyright in February 1916 by James M. McCulloch of Phoenix, a photographer who documented the project. Its long format, roughly 7.5 by 36 inches, shows the scale of the spillway and reservoir that the dam created.
