Roosevelt Dam, on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, is the focus here, along with the reservoir it holds back behind its curved masonry wall. The federal Reclamation Service built the dam, finished it in 1911, and named it for Theodore Roosevelt, who dedicated it that year to store water for irrigation in the Salt River Valley. Aerial views like this were uncommon in the 1910s, so the high vantage shows how the lake fills the canyon above the dam in a way ground-level pictures could not.
