Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in central Arizona is the particular subject here, a masonry dam completed in 1911 and named for President Theodore Roosevelt, who authorized the federal reclamation project that built it. The dam was a centerpiece of the Salt River Project, which stored water for irrigating the Phoenix area's farmland and became one of the first large works under the Reclamation Act of 1902. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures reached newspapers nationwide. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the exposure is unconfirmed.
