Rather than a ground-level view of the concrete wall, this glass negative records Roosevelt Dam from the air, a rare vantage for the period, and it captures the structure as an engineering landmark set into the rugged Salt River canyon in central Arizona. The dam was built between 1905 and 1911 by the U.S. Reclamation Service to store water for irrigation in the Salt River Valley, and it was named for President Theodore Roosevelt, who authorized the Newlands Reclamation Act's projects and dedicated the work in 1911. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm active in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of such views for sale to the public. The negative's date is an estimate from the surrounding negatives, so the image is best read as a late-1910s record of a dam already long in service.
