Roosevelt Dam, on the Salt River about 75 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, was named for President Theodore Roosevelt, who dedicated it in 1911 as the centerpiece of the federal Salt River Project. Built to store water for irrigating the Salt River Valley, it was among the largest masonry dams of its day and transformed a desert farming region. This panoramic view shows the dam and the reservoir behind it, and it is a useful record of early federal reclamation work in the American West.
