Taken from below the dam wall, this view looks up at the masonry face of Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The federal reclamation program built the dam in the first decade of the 1900s to store water for irrigating desert farmland in the Salt River Valley, and President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated it in 1911, lending it his name. The photograph was made by McCulloch of Phoenix around 1915, when the dam was already a landmark of the region's water system and a symbol of Roosevelt's conservation legacy.
