This drawing is set on a drawbridge, a subject that recurs in Japanese views of Edo's moated castle grounds, and its catalog tags point to foreign visitors in Tokyo. The record lists 1750 as the date, but the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, so the date is probably approximate. Koryūsai was an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist known for prints of women, courtesans and everyday scenes, and his work reflects the commercial culture of the city. The subject tags place the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when foreign travelers increasingly visited the city and recorded it in sketches and prints.
