A drawbridge crossing a Tokyo waterway, with foreign visitors among its listed subjects, sets this drawing apart from the other pieces on the board. Its catalog date of 1750 does not match the artist's listed working years or the 1850 to 1900 range in its subject headings, so the later period is the likelier setting. The artist is given as Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based ukiyo-e painter and printmaker active from about 1764 to 1788. Canals and moats made bridges a constant feature of Tokyo, and by the late 1800s Western travelers were eager to record such scenes. Treat the dates as approximate and the image as a view of a city in transition.
