A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart, and the catalog headings place the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an artist who worked in Edo from about 1764 to 1788, does not fit that later range or the 1750 date in the record, so the dating is best treated as uncertain. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868 when the imperial capital moved there, and foreign residents and travelers became a new presence in the city during those years. The drawing is worth studying for how it frames that meeting between Japanese city life and outside observers.
