Drawbridges and foreign visitors in Tokyo are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, which places its setting in the later nineteenth century, after the Meiji government opened the city to Western travelers in 1868. The record also credits Isoda Koryūsai, active from about 1764 to 1788, but gives the date as 1750, so the dates do not agree and should be read with caution. Koryūsai worked in Edo and is best known for elegant prints of women in the ukiyo-e tradition. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.
