This stereograph shows Fifth Avenue at Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh, which its title calls the city's busiest thoroughfare. Issued around 1907 by the H.C. White Co. of Chicago, a publisher known for stereo views, it was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused two side-by-side photographs into a single image with depth. At the time Pittsburgh was one of the country's leading steel and manufacturing centers, and its downtown streets carried heavy foot traffic, streetcars, and wagons. Views like this one document that everyday bustle as well as the street's architecture.
