Fifth Avenue at Smithfield Street was among the busiest crossings in downtown Pittsburgh, and this 1907 view shows the street as a working city thoroughfare. In the early 1900s, Pittsburgh was a center of steel and iron manufacturing, and its downtown streets carried streetcars, delivery wagons, and pedestrians moving between offices, shops, and the rail and river connections nearby. The picture was registered for copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is one reason it survives as a dated record of the streetscape and daily traffic of that period.
