From the hill behind Sligo, this view looks down over the city and its rivers from an elevated vantage point. It is a photograph of an earlier wood engraving by Butler Stripe, catalogued as number 229 in the *Iconography of Pittsburg*, a series of printed city views. The catalog date of about 1857 places the original during the years when Pittsburgh was expanding rapidly as a center of iron, glass, and river commerce. Printed city views of this kind were often used to show a booming town to readers elsewhere, so the engraving served as civic promotion as much as a record of the landscape. The date and other details come from an old caption card and have not been verified.
